Congratulations Ms. Sekaggya Margaret upon the renewal of your mandate by UN

Ms. Margaret Sekaggya

 

ACFODE wishes to congratulate Ms. Sekaggya Margaret upon the renewal of her mandate as a Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders.


Ms. Sekaggya is one of the members on ACFODE's Board of Trustees. She has held the office since 2008 when she was first appointed as the Chairperson of Uganda Human Rights Commission. On Thursday March 24th, the Human Rights Council renewed her mandate for another 3 years.


While addressing media about the good news, Ms. Sekaggya urged governments to respond favorably to the requests of the Special Rapporteur to visit their countries and engage them in constructive dialogue with her office in regard to implementation of UN recommendations of human rights. ACFODE wishes you all the best during your new mandate Margaret.

Inter - University Debate Trainings
Students during the training at Soroti Flying School From the 22nd to the 26th of March, ACFODE staff were in Soroti training students from various institutions of higher learning from Eastern Uganda for the upcoming inter- university debate competitions.

Participating institutions were Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU), Kumi University, Uganda College of Commerce (UCC), East  Africa Civil Aviation Academy (soroti Air Field/ Flying School) and Soroti Nursing School participated 

 

This is line with ACFODE's theme 'Embracing the Youth and Looking Ahead,' which was adapted last year during Silver Jubilee Celebrations. The goal of these debates is to improve students' public speaking competencies and also to involve them in the women's movement.

 

During the training, students were introduced to the British Parliamentary Format and equipped with skillls to favorably compete in the debates slated for April 9th at Soroti Flying School.

  Account for ACFODE's General Meeting

Ms. Jane Nakintu, ACFODE's chair during the opening of the GM

On the 26th of March, we had our General Meeting. Participants included ACFODE members and staff.

While giving her opening remarks, ACFODE's Chairperson, Ms. Jane Nakintu thanked ACFODE members and staff for always portraying commitment to the organization's activities. She also applauded them for the dedication, team effort and loyalty that were revealed during the ACFODE's Silver Jubilee Celebrations in 201. Ms. Nakintu acknowledged that it was due to these factors that the celebrations turned out to be successful.

Ms Nakintu also thanked participants for the enormous support accorded to ACFODE's out going board which she has chaired for the last 3 years and also announced that appointment for the new board that will be elected in May, 2011. Watch full speech

A presentation about ACFODE's Consultancy policy was made by Ms. Kawasiima Christine, a Board Member.

Ms. Regina Bafaki, ACFODE' Executive Director gave an up date from the Secretariat.

Networking activities

 

Fundraising/ Resource Mobilisation Course

Sandra Nassali and Rachael Mpiriirwe from ACFODE attended a resource mobilization course organized by DIAKONIA at Kingfisher Resort in Jinja from 21st - 25th March. Participates were equipped with skills/ knowledge on how to leverage an effective resource mobilization strategy in their organization. More than 25 participants from different CSOs attended the course.


NGO Forum Write-Shop

We participated in a Write-Shop organized by NGO Forum on the 29th of March. The Write-Shop meant to introduce participants to a comprehensive National NGO Online Directory that NGO Forum is embarking on to increase the visibility of Uganda's NGOs at both local and international levels.

 

Ms. Regina Bafaki, ACFODE's Executive Director met with different CSOs in Mubende district doing work related to gender based violence. The purpose of this was to carry out an organisation capacity and needs assessment for gender and productive health.

 

We also hosted Martin, Andreas and Hauke - guests from EIRENE, one of our development partners.
